Liposuction - also called lipoplasty and liposculpture or just plain lipo

Although there seems to be a myriad of names for liposuction - the one trying to sound more glamorous and effective than the next - they are in actual fact all the same. So if you want to call it lipo, liposculpture, lipoplasty or liposuction - they are all one and the same.

Types of liposuction liposuction

There are basically two types of liposuction, although there might be people that would like to tell you differently. You have liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction.

Is liposuction for me? liposuction

If you are not morbidly obese and near to ideal body weight, but are plagued by areas that stubbornly refuse to shed the extra weight then liposuction could be for you.

These problematic areas that we refer to are normally around the hips (love handles) outer thighs (saddle bags), inner thighs, knees, arms and abdomen. Your weight should also not yo-yo and a stable weight must have been maintained for some time - 6 months is normally the recommended period of time - should you wish to have liposuction done.

Liposuction is not an alternative to all-over weight loss - if you need to slim down in general, rather go on a diet for the desired effect - it may take longer but is the only way you will achieve an all-over weight loss.

You may want to have a look at the Michael Meyer Éclat Diet which is an easy-to-follow diet - you can access it by clicking here. (It is on our site with the permission of Zest for Life™ and www.anyvitamins.com)

The "quality" of your skin is also important. If you have poor skin tone and loose folds as well as stretch marks, you may not be an ideal patient for liposuction, since your skin will not be able to tighten and assume your new body contour after the liposuction, and you will be left with loose folds of skin.

In some people's minds, liposuction is only performed on women, but men have great results with liposuction for eliminating bulging fat around the waist.

  • What types of liposuction can be had? liposuction
    • Since the 1970s liposuction has been performed by filling the fat with tumescent fluid, which is saline based combined with adrenaline and lidocaine, which "stiffens" the fat while it also reduces bleeding when removed.
    • When the filling procedure has been completed the tumescent fluid and fat is then suctioned away by means of thin rods. The incisions are relatively small and generally heal well.
    • Ultrasonic liposuction is very similar to that of tumescent liposuction, but uses ultrasound to liquefy the fat before removing it. The ultrasonic energy is delivered to the area by means of a thin rod and the fat is thereafter removed.
  • Limitations of liposuction liposuction
  • After your liposuction liposuction
    • After the operation has been completed, you will be wearing a liposuction garment, which you will have to wear for several weeks. Plastic surgeons class the operations to the amount of excess removed and 6 - 9 liters would qualify as an extensive liposuction procedure.
    • Swelling will start to abate within 3 - 8 weeks and bruising will start to go within the first two weeks. Work can be started within 2 - 3 weeks after the operation, but will depend on what volume of work was done.
    • The final results should be visible after the swelling has gone down and that should take about 8 weeks.
  • Notes on liposuction liposuction
    • Liposuction is a major surgical procedure, and like all surgical procedures carries certain risks. Blood clots are known to form after any type of extended surgery, but fat embolus is a risk to be aware of when having liposuction surgery - that is where fat collects in the blood vessels and may then travel via the circulatory system and lodge in the lungs which can interfere with breathing.
    • Be sure that your plastic surgeon is well versed in liposuction, as less skilled surgeons, using too thick suction rods, can cause dimples, irregularities etc in the area treated to liposuction.
    • After surgery the skin may discolor, which is not abnormal and a burning and tingling feeling is also common after the operation in the areas treated and may last up to two months.
    • Cellulite will not be treated or removed with liposuction, since liposuction targets the deep fat while cellulite is a collection of fat and toxins in the superficial layer.
