Breast reduction surgery

Patients may feel a need to have their breast size reduced with a breast reduction procedure, due to physical symptoms caused by excessive large breasts, and while having this procedure the plastic surgeon at the same time can correct any other problems like size and shape as well.

General information on reducing breast size

Breast reduction surgery is normally indicated in patients that have breasts proportionally too large for their body frame and where the woman feels self-conscious about the largeness of her breasts, or where the breasts are too heavy and have nipples pointing downwards.

If skin irritation occurs in the fold underneath the breast due to skin-on-skin friction or where one breast is larger than the other, or where back, neck and shoulder pain is experienced from too heavy breasts (which would include indentations in the shoulders due to tight bra straps) breast reduction will also be indicated.

Incision marks of breast reduction surgery breast size reduced

The surgical procedure normally involve three incisions on each breast - that being around the areola, one leading straight down from the edge of the areola to the fold underneath the breast and the third cut following the natural curve of the breast.

After the incisions are done, excess fat, tissue and skin is removed and the areola and nipple moved to a higher position on the breast. At the same time the size of the areola may be trimmed down, since large breasts normally are accompanied by stretched and enlarged areolas. Liposuction may also be employed to contour the area under the arm.

Since the nipple and areola are not normally severed from underlying tissue (unless the breasts are extremely large), nipple sensation is not usually lost, and breastfeeding ability may also not be influenced, although there are no guarantees regarding this.

Having breast reduction surgery will not influence the risk of breast cancer and it could help if the breasts are causing you functional problems.

The incision marks will be bright red after surgery but normally fade within a couple of months to a more natural skin color. It is important to note that although the plastic surgeon will use fine stitching to close the wound, scar tissue may form depending on how you personally heal, or if you are prone to keloids forming. These marks are however normally not visible even if low-cut clothing is worn.

  • Notes on breast reduction surgery breast size reduced
    • After breast reduction surgery you should prepare yourself for a radical change in your breasts, but you will normally find that your breasts are firmer and this procedure has one of the highest rates of satisfaction in patients having cosmetic procedures.
    • Normal aging will however take its toll, and should your breasts start drooping after some time, you could consider having a breast lift (mastopexy).
    • Click here for more information regarding this cosmetic surgery procedure.
    • After breast reduction surgery you will have to take things a bit slow for a couple of weeks where after you can return to work, and no lifting or bending is allowed during the recuperation period, as it may increase swelling.
    • Stitches will have to be removed over a period of 3 - 4 weeks but your plastic surgeon will be able to give you full details regarding post-operative care, since each case has individual needs and precautions.
    • Sexual activity should not be engaged in for at least ten days after surgery and extreme gentleness will have to be followed for at least eight weeks after that.
    • Medical insurance (also called medical aid schemes in some countries) do not normally cover the cost of breast reduction surgery, unless it is deemed to be of functional necessity and approved by such insurance/aid scheme beforehand.
