With age, gravity and lifestyle all playing its part, the female breast normally starts drooping (referred to as ptosis) over a period of time - it is sometimes referred to as Cooper's droop, since it involves the stretching and elongation of the supensory ligaments of Cooper, due to aging, pregnancy or by weight fluctuations.

To determine if your breasts are drooping, and to what degree, inspect your breast in a mirror, in profile.
Should your nipples be situated below or at the same level of the fold under your breast, you will have mild or minor ptosis, and dropping down below this level would be classified as moderate droop.
Should the nipple be at the lower end of the breast contour, and be facing down, with the breast volume situated below the breast crease (also referred to as the inframammary crease) it would be classified as major or advanced droop.
If a patient is happy with their breast volume, yet have some degree of ptosis, a mastopexy could help to raise them and give a more youthful appearance.
When there has been a loss of breast volume, the implantation of a breast augmentation device may be called for at the same time when doing the lift.
Lifting of smaller sized breasts gives a better, and longer lasting result than those of heavier or fuller breasts. It is better if this procedure is done
after childbearing, since pregnancy and breastfeeding can have unpredictable results.
Breastfeeding ability is not normally affected by this procedure, but it must be discussed with the plastic surgeon should you plan to get pregnant.
Breast lift surgery can help you achieve a more youthful appearance and the positioning of the areolas and nipples can be enhanced, while the size of the areolas can also be aesthetically corrected.
- Breast lift surgical procedure

- When considering having a breast lift done, it must be kept in mind that incisions will have to be made on your breasts to attain the results, and that scars may be visible, depending on how well you heal in general.
- Scars normally fade in time, and are not visible even when wearing low-cut clothing, but the extent of scarring, and where the incisions will be, must be discussed fully with the plastic surgeon before committing yourself to this procedure.
- Three incisions will need to be made - one around the areola, one extending from the nipple downwards toward the ribcage as well as one following the crease of the breast.
- After the operation you may have swelling for about a week and bandages will also be used during that time. Stitches will have to be removed during this period as well but your plastic surgeon will provide full post-operative instructions.
- After breast lift surgery you will have to take things a bit slow for about two weeks where after you can return to work, and no lifting or bending is allowed during the recuperation period, as it may increase swelling and cause bleeding as well.
- Sexual activity should not be engaged in for three weeks after surgery and extreme gentleness will have to be followed for at least nine weeks after that.
